Stripped off the old wallpaper and found the GIB underneath looking rough? Patches of facing paper have torn away, and what's left is fuzzy and furry to the touch. It's one of the most common surprises in a redecorating job.
The mistake most people make
Skimming straight over it.
Wet compound soaks into the loose paper fibres, the paper swells, and you end up with bubbles and blisters that spoil the finish. The fix: seal with Zinsser GARDZ first, repair, then seal again before the new wallpaper goes up.
Meet the fix
What is Zinsser GARDZ?
A clear, water-based acrylic sealer made for problem porous surfaces before painting, texturing or wallpapering. It soaks into damaged facing paper and binds the loose fibres back into a sound, hard surface you can repair over.
Stops bubbling
Sealed paper no longer swells when the skim coat goes on.
Locks in old paste
Leftover adhesive can reactivate and crack. GARDZ seals it in.
Sound base
Dries to a hard, moisture-resistant film and makes future stripping easier.
It goes on milky blue-white so you can see where you've been, then dries water-clear. Low odour, and cleans up with soap and water.
Step by step
How to fix fuzzy GIB before wallpapering
Strip and clean
Remove any loose paper and as much old paste as you can. Wipe the wall down and let it dry completely.
Seal the damage with GARDZ
Apply GARDZ liberally over the exposed, fuzzy paper with a brush, a short-nap roller (10mm or less) or a sprayer. Roll walls from the bottom up so it doesn't run. Don't thin it, and don't overload it or it will sag. Let it dry.
Fill and skim
Patch and skim the damaged areas with joint compound. Because the paper is sealed, it won't bubble. Let it dry, then sand smooth.
Seal again
Give the whole repaired wall a second coat of GARDZ. A properly sealed wall has an even sheen, so touch up any dull or missed spots.
Prime if needed, then hang your paper
If your wallpaper needs an opaque base, roll on one coat of Zinsser ShieldZ (see below). Then hang your new paper once everything is fully dry.
Pro tip
Seal before you fill, not just after
Most people only think to seal the wall once it's repaired. The coat that matters most is the first one, straight onto the fuzzy paper, before any compound goes near it. Any patch you miss is exactly where the bubbles will appear.

Thin or light-coloured wallpaper?
Finish with Zinsser ShieldZ
GARDZ dries clear, so it won't hide filler patches or colour differences in the wall. Under thin, pale or translucent wallpaper, those marks can show through. Zinsser's own data sheet recommends an opaque primer for these papers, and names ShieldZ as the one to use.
- Hides patches and colour differences under the paper
- Primes, seals and sizes the wall, so paper slides into position and grips well
- Resists mould and mildew behind the wallpaper
- Makes future stripping easier, helping protect the GIB next time
It can also be tinted to a medium tone to match your wallpaper's background, so small gaps at the seams don't show.
How to use it with GARDZ: let the second coat of GARDZ dry (3 hours, longer if it's cool), roll on one coat of ShieldZ, let it dry, then hang your paper. Always check your wallpaper maker's instructions first.
Watch
See it done
Watch a tradesman repair torn face paper with GARDZ. (It's from North America, so you'll hear "drywall" for GIB and "mud" for joint compound.)

What users say
One buyer sealed torn paper, gave it a second coat, then skimmed and primed with no bubbling at all. The one small spot they skipped bubbled straight away.
Decorators also report using GARDZ routinely to seal walls after stripping old wallpaper.
